Interview with ‘Room 104’ Composer/Director Julian Wass

In 2017 anthology series Room 104 debuted on HBO. The show created by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass ran for four seasons before ending in 2020. Set in an American roadside motel room, 104, each episode featured a bizarre scenario set in a different genre.

Regardless of the character focus or whether it was a horror, thriller, tragedy or comedy the music play a large part in the theme of not only the episode but the season as a whole. The show owes its sonic signature to music supervisor Julian Wass.  If you've seen 2018's The Miseducation of Cameron Post, then you've heard a Wass feature film score. By the second season of Room 104, Wass not only oversaw the music, he'd joined the writers' room.

If you're a fan of Brian Tyree Henry and Room 104 then you're no stranger to season 2 standout, Arnold (episode 6). What you may not realize is, Julian Wass not only co-wrote the episode; he made his TV directorial debut.  Arnold is also the show's first full musical episode.

While prepping, I realized that Wass is involved with co-writing more than one episode that's a personal favorite, like season 3's Rogue about a teenager and psychically gifted scavenger who cross paths in a dangerous post-apocalyptic future as well as series finale episode, Generations, starring Ntare Mwine.

As the show went into its final season - and its final full musical episode, Last Man (starring Kevin McKidd) directed by Wass, about time traveling warriors - in the "key" of Highlander - locked in battle, Julian Wass took the time to chat about his time with Room 104 and its sound.

Yasuke, arrived in Japan in 1579. Not long after being "presented" to  Oda Nobunaga, the Japanese Daimyō - who took an interest in him after determining his skin was really black -  he began to serve as a retainer in his court. I don't know about you, but watching an anime about the first African ronin is high on my list.

Colson Whitehead's book The Underground Railroad hit bookshelves in 2016 and changed the relationship between historical fiction rooted in Black history and fantasy. In Whitehead's world, the underground railroad isn't just a figure  of speech. There's an actual secret set of tracks and tunnels running below ground throughout the South.  It's an absolutely captivating read and if you haven't put this one on your list of books to read before you die. Fix that. This is more than just another story of an enslaved woman's bid to be free.

Earlier today, Amazon Prime released the official trailer of its upcoming 10 episode limited series The Underground Railroad. Mark your calendars because with Barry Jenkins as showrunner and director this series looks ready to leave the station.

Dead Girls Don’t Get to Tell Their Stories

$

When I was young, I didn’t start fights … but I finished them. It took a lot to push me to fight. Anything that resulted in throwing hands was usually preceded by weeks of bullying or taunts. And the easiest way to goad me into a fight was if I saw someone more vulnerable than me being bullied. I’ve always had an innate sense of justice and a low tolerance for injustice. Here on the network, we joke about “villain agendas” but it’s that intolerance for injustice that makes us take a moment to listen when Magneto talks about mutant rights or when Killmonger shames Wakanda for hiding in the shadows while Black people all over the globe suffer. So when I watched the finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier mere days after seeing the death of Ma’Khia Bryant, something in me broke open. I thought of all the Karlis and Ma’Khias who don’t get to tell their own stories because they aren’t alive to speak their truth and I could feel that anger rising in me. Where was the justice?

I promise I’m not trying to be hyperbolic, but for the past month, I’ve watched people on social media defend the actions of John Walker (“he was brainwashed”, “the serum made him worse”) and defend the redemption of Bucky (“he, too, was brainwashed”, “he’s changed”, “he deserves a second chance”) while those same people threw away Karli because of one violent act. It was Karli, the young girl, the woman of color, who was beyond redemption. Despite the scores of grown men making dubious choices on this show, she had gone too far to ever be saved. So when those bullets, fired from Sharon’s gun, tore through Karli’s back, I could not help but flashback to a similar scene just a few days before. A young girl, pushed to the edge, trying desperately to defend herself only to have four bullets shot into her back.

Since Ma’Khia’s death, the response has been one of victim-blaming. What Ma’Khia should’ve/could’ve done to not end up dead but no one is asking the right questions. No one is asking “why?”.

This is where I have to give some praise to TFATWS. They could have had Sam, weary but dignified, carry Karli’s body through the frame and then proclaimed him the new Captain America and let the government go about doing what it does to maintain the status quo. But Sam stood there and spoke for Karli and made them ask why. Why was Karli a terrorist and not a freedom fighter? Why weren’t they listening to her? Why was she able to amass so many supporters? But the tragic part is that when if we do take a moment to ask why it’s always after the tragedy. After the life has been taken. Why is that?

As I said, I don’t start fights, I finish them. So by the time someone shows up, what they’re going to see is me wailing on someone after I’ve been pushed too far. After I’ve seen their cruelty or endured their injustice and been pushed past my limit. Is that a justification for death? And in the case of Karli and Ma’Khia, the people that are left to justify what happened are the ones who took their lives. I applaud TFATWS for having Sam give voice to Karli’s cause, but even that speaks volumes about who is allowed to speak and who will be listened to. History is told by the victor and unfortunately, Black girls can’t seem to win.

Synopsis: Theo Abrams (Jarrid Geduld) used to be one hell of a firefighter. Today, he’s forcibly retired – wracked with PTSD over the on-the-job deaths of friends. Soon, he will find himself the target of every cop in Cape Town, a wanted man denounced as a public danger over a horrific crime he has zero memory of committing. In his efforts to understand what happened, Theo will uncover a secret so terrible it will make the cops hunting him become the least of his worries. And all hell will break loose.

Official Press Release:

July 28, 2021 -- Indemnity is the latest from Cape Town production studio Gambit Films, producers of the hit Netflix series Blood & Water and instrumental in bringing South African genre cinema into the mainstream. The film marks the feature debut from writer/director Travis Taute, co-writer of Nosipho Dumisa’s award-winning NUMBER 37 and co-director of the short that preceded it by the same name, as well as a writer and director on Blood & Water.

Reaching a whole new scale of production for South African action films, Indemnity's lead, Jarrid Geduld, spent three months training with stunt masters Vernon Willemse and Grant Powell (Fury Road, Tomb Raider) and succeeded at all of his own stunts, including a record-breaking hanging suspension stunt performed from the 21st floor.

Indemnity stars  SAFTA-award winner Jarrid Geduld (Ellen: Die Storie Van Ellen Pakkies), Nicole Fortuin (Flatland), Andre Jacobs (Black Venus), Gail Mabalane (Blood & Water), and Tshamano Sebe (The Soul Collector). The film is produced by Bradley Joshua and Benjamin Overmeyer.

Indemnity's World Premiere is August 11th at the Imperial Theatre in Montreal, QC. It will also screen on the festival's virtual platform.

Synopsis: Glasshouse is set after The Shred, an airborne dementia, has left humanity roaming like lost and dangerous animals, unable to remember who they are. Confined to their airtight glasshouse, a family does what they must to survive - until the sisters are seduced by a stranger who upsets the family’s rituals, unearthing a past they have tried to bury.

Press Release

Glasshouse stars British actress Jessica Alexander (the upcoming live action remake of The Little Mermaid) and newcomer Anja Taljaard as the sisters, Bee and Evie, opposite Hilton Pelser (the BAFTA-nominated Moffie, the upcoming remake of Dangerous Liaisons) as The Stranger.

“Sensual and savage, Glasshouse weaves aspects of dystopian science fiction with notes of folk horror and perverse, brooding, Gothic melodrama to craft a taught existential tale that ultimately explores the importance of storytelling and memory,” says Fantasia, using additional adjectives like “stunning.”

The spooky yet sexy post-pandemic love triangle is the feature film directorial debut of Kelsey Egan, who co-wrote the script with associate producer Emma Lungiswa de Wet. Kelsey and Emma are award-winning writers: Kelsey is best known for helping adapt the Deon Meyer bestseller Trackers for M-Net, Cinemax and ZDF, while Emma was a staff writer on the YouTube animated phenomenon Munki and Trunk, which now has over six million subscribers to its Jungle Beat channel.

“I’ve been working towards directing features since I made my first short back in 2008, so to end up directing my first film in 2020 of all years feels like some form of dramatic irony,” says Kelsey. “To shoot this intimate post-apocalyptic fable during the pandemic was a surreal experience.”

DoP Justus de Jager (an Africa Movie Academy Award nominee for Siembamba) shot Glasshouse at The Pearson Conservatory, a Victorian glasshouse marooned in the Eastern Cape since 1881. Emma calls the national monument, which she remembers from childhood, “the perfect setting for a story about memory: a colonial relic at once fragile and persistent.”

Kelsey adds that Glasshouse “explores two opposing coping mechanisms to trauma: holding tightly to the past as a form of preservation, and wilful forgetting."

Greig Buckle is producing through Local Motion Pictures. Buckle was co-producer of the Oscar-shortlisted Life, Above All and line produced the #1 US box office hit Chronicle, among other high-profile service jobs in South Africa.

Film and theatre veteran Adrienne Pearce (the BAFTA-winning Troy and the Emmy-winning The Triangle); 12-year-old Naledi Award winner and Fleur du Cap nominee Kitty Harris (Matilda the Musical); and rising star Brent Vermeulen co-star. Brent was singled out by The Hollywood Reporter as “one of this year's major acting discoveries in Cannes” when The Harvesters (Die Stropers) screened in Un Certain Regard in 2018 and has gone on to act in Griekwastad, named Best Film at the 2021 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), and in South African TV series like the critically-acclaimed 4 Mure and the SAFTA-nominated Alles Malan.

Glasshouse is a claustrophobic, thought-provoking story of family survival and buried secrets,” says Candice Fangueiro, head of content at Showmax. “We’re delighted the film is having its world premiere at Fantasia, the latest in a string of coups for South African films this year, like Moffie’s BAFTA nomination, Five Tiger’s selection for Sundance, Gaia winning the ZEISS Cinematography Award at SXSW, and This Is Not A Burial, It’s A Resurrection being ranked fourth on Metacritic’s list of the best-reviewed films of 2021 so far.”

Glasshouse is the first film in a three-picture dystopian slate Showmax has developed with Local Motion Pictures, in association with Crave Pictures, with Kelsey directing.

This October, Glasshouse will release as a Cinema Premiere on BoxOffice by DStv and will be available to rent on PVRs only in South Africa, as well as in countries on the African continent where BoxOffice is available. Glasshouse will be available to stream on Showmax in Africa from February 2022

Time and time again, the thirst for knowledge and the power it brings is quenched by blood and fire...

At last, the pod touches down on terra firma, and its occupant emerges, map in hand and mission in mind. The surrounding landscape is a broken place of corruption and decay, of casual horror and degradation. Our hero will not be deterred, though the path ahead holds only more horrors, so many to behold...

Mad Dog will screen a second time on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 9:00 AM.

There's plenty more to be had in animated short and films during the festival. So don't sleep on the Axis Section.

If you do, you might just miss seeing the documentary about visionary creator Satoshi Kon (Tokyo Godfathers) and that would really be a damn shame.

This documentary is available the run of the festival and can be watched on demand.

Public tickets and passes are on sale now, and while screening capacity is limited, there still a chance for you to nab a single ticket ($20) to specific film, a Day Pass ($100) or an Explorer Pass ($50). If you just want to check out the eight festival award winners, then the Awards Winner Package ($300) may be just the thing.

Wondering What to Watch this Year?

After digging into this year's schedule, it's safe to say that there's plenty worth tuning in for. To help you decide, we've pulled together a short list of five projects that peaked our interest. This year's festival begins January 20 and runs through the 30th. More than enough time to work in some time to hit up the fest.

January 20, 2022 - First Screening Start Time: 10:55 PM PT

Fresh - When that grocery story meet-cute leads to a chemistry-laden weekend getaway, of course that's when things go left. Her new love interest has some unique...appetites.

January 21, 2022 - Spotlight Screening 10:45 AM PT

January 22, 2022 - First Screening Start Time: 5:00 PM PT

Dual - Sarah's dying and decides to have a clone created to replace her. But a change of mind leaves Sarah's clone wondering where they belong and what's to become of them.

Aaron Paul and Karen Gillan appear in DUAL by Riley Stearns, an official selection of the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Karen Gillan's caught our eye in the past and this sci-fi dark comedy looks like just the type of role(s) she needs to settle any lingering questions about her range as an actress. And if you've already seen Swan Song (if not, get into that one) then you know the idea of leaving your family with a copy of you in the event of your untimely death, is a narrative just teeming with story potential.

January 22, 2022 - First Screening Start Time: 7:00 PM PT

Resurrection - Margaret's past comes back to haunt her in the form of a man she's been running from for two decades.  and upend her quiet comfortable life. When he refuses to go away, Margaret must resolve their unfinished business.

Rebecca Hall appears in Resurrection by Andrew Semans, an official selection of the Premieres section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Wyatt Garfield.

It's a psychological thriller starring Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth. Things are bound to be disturbing. Written and directed by Andrew Semans, this one promises to be a blend of the dramatic, horrific and surreal...of course we're in.

Ro's in for the entire festival so keep an eye out for more through the week and weekend.

But a quick pit stop at home alters their plans when they find a white girl passed out on the living room floor. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

But what begins as an idyllic reunion soon takes a turn as the hosts increasingly test the limits of their houseguests. Now the Danes find themselves caught in a web of their own politeness, trying to understand whether their new friends are merely eccentric... or hiding something more sinister.

Alice | Director: Krystin Ver Linden

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Rescued on the roadside by a disillusioned Black activist named Frank (Common), Alice uncovers the lies that have kept her enslaved and the promise of Black liberation.

Dual | Director: Riley Stearns

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Recently diagnosed with a rare and incurable disease, Sarah is unsure how to process the news. To help ease her friends’ and family’s impending loss, she is encouraged to participate in a simple futuristic cloning procedure called “Replacement,” after which Sarah’s last days will be spent teaching the clone how to live on as Sarah once she’s gone. But while it takes only an hour for a clone to be made, things become significantly more challenging when that double is no longer wanted.

Resurrection | Director: Andrew Semans

Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Wyatt Garfield.

Sundance Synopsis: Margaret (Rebecca Hall) leads a successful and orderly life, perfectly balancing the demands of her busy career and single parenthood to her fiercely independent daughter Abbie. But that careful balance is upended when she glimpses a man she instantly recognizes, an unwelcome shadow from her past. A short time later, she encounters him again. Before long, Margaret starts seeing David (Tim Roth) everywhere — and their meetings appear to be far from an unlucky coincidence. Battling her rising fear, Margaret must confront the monster she’s evaded for two decades who has come to conclude their unfinished business.

God's Country | Director: Julian Higgins

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Sandra (Thandiwe Newton) is very tired. It’s been years of trying (and failing) to please her recently deceased mother, while also navigating the challenging politics and power dynamics at the college where she teaches. And then there is the racism, sexism, and toxic masculinity she encounters wherever she goes. But it’s a confrontation with two hunters trespassing on her property that ultimately tests Sandra’s self-restraint, pushing her grief and mounting anger to their limits. God’s Country examines one woman’s grieving process and determination to be taken seriously amid her refusal to surrender to the confines of society.

Marte Um (Mars One) | Director: Gabriel Martins

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: The Martins family are optimistic dreamers, quietly leading their lives in the margins of a major Brazilian city following the disappointing inauguration of a far-right extremist president. A lower-middle-class Black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she’s cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all of his hopes into the soccer career of their son, Deivinho, who reluctantly follows his father’s ambitions despite secretly aspiring to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, their older daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and ponders whether it’s time to leave home.

Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul | Director: Adamma Ebo (Producer Adanne Ebo)

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: As the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch, Trinitie Childs carries immense responsibility on her shoulders. Her church, Wander To Greater Paths, once served a congregation in the tens of thousands, but after a scandal involving her husband, Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, forced the church to close temporarily, Trinitie is struggling to manage the aftermath. Now Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must rebuild their congregation and reconcile their faith by all means necessary to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen.

My Old School |Director: Jono McLeod

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: In 1993, 16-year-old Brandon Lee enrolled at Bearsden Academy, a secondary school in a well-to-do suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. What followed over the next two years would become the stuff of legend. Brandon had been privately tutored in Canada while he accompanied his mother, an opera diva, on tour before her tragic death. The preternaturally bright student surprised teachers by blazing toward his goal of entering medical school, displaying a wealth of knowledge beyond his years. Brandon found friends despite his initial awkwardness. He took bullied students under his wing, introduced classmates to seminal retro bands, and even starred in the school's production of South Pacific. But then his unbelievable secret was revealed.

Master | Director: Mariama Diallo

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: At an elite New England university built on the site of a Salem-era gallows hill, three women strive to find their place. Gail Bishop (Regina Hall), just instated as “Master,” a dean of students, discovers what lies behind the school’s immaculate facade; first-year student Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee) confronts a new home that is cold and unwelcoming; and literature professor Liv Beckman (Amber Gray) collides with colleagues who question her right to belong. Navigating politics and privilege, they encounter increasingly terrifying manifestations of the school’s haunted past… and present.

Nanny | Director: Nikyatu Jusu

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Aisha, an undocumented Senegalese immigrant, lands a job as a nanny of a wealthy Manhattan couple. While she easily wins the affection of their young daughter Rose, she becomes a pawn in the couple’s facade of a marriage. The mother is as controlling as the dad is disillusioned and woke. Haunted by the absence of the young son she left behind in Senegal, Aisha hopes her new job will afford her the chance to bring him to the U.S. and share in the life she is piecing together. But as his arrival approaches, a supernatural presence begins to invade both her dreams and her reality.

After Yang | Director: Kogonada

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: When Yang — a lifelike, artificially intelligent android that Jake and Kyra buy as a companion for their adopted daughter — abruptly stops functioning, Jake just wants him repaired quickly and cheaply. But having purchased Yang “certified refurbished” from a now-defunct store, he’s led first to a conspiracy theorist technician and then a technology museum curator, who discovers that Yang was actually recording memories. Jake’s quest eventually becomes one of existential introspection and contemplating his own life, as it passes him by.

Leonor Will Never Die | Director: Martika Ramirez Escobar

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Leonor Reyes was once a major player in the Filipino film industry after creating a string of successful action films, but now her household struggles to pay the bills. When she reads an advertisement looking for screenplays, Leonor begins tinkering with an unfinished script about the quest of young, noble Ronwaldo, forced to avenge his brother’s murder at the hand of thugs. While her imagination provides some escape from reality, she goes all-in after an accident involving a television knocks her out, sends her into a coma, and transports her inside the incomplete movie. Now Leonor can play out her wildest dreams firsthand and discover the perfect ending to her story.

You Won't Be Alone | Director: Goran Stolevski

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: In an isolated mountain village in 19th-century Macedonia, a young girl is taken from her mother and transformed into a witch by an ancient, shape-shifting spirit. Left to wander feral, the young witch beholds the natural world with curiosity and wonder. After inadvertently killing a villager and assuming her body, she continues to inhabit different people, living among the villagers for years, observing and mimicking their behavior until the ancient spirit returns, bringing them full circle.

Piggy | Director: Carlota Pereda

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: With the summer sun beating down on her rural Spanish town, Sara hides away in her parent’s butcher shop. A teenager whose excess weight makes her the target of incessant bullying, she flees a clique of capricious girls who torment her at the town pool, only to stumble upon them being brutally kidnapped by a stranger, who drives off with them in his van. When the police begin asking questions, Sara keeps quiet. Intrigued by the stranger — an interest that’s mutual — she’s torn between revealing the truth and protecting the man who saved her.

Documentaries

Aftershock | Director: Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: An alarmingly disproportionate number of Black women are failed every year by the U.S. maternal health system. Shamony Gibson and Amber Rose Isaac were vibrant, excited mothers-to-be whose deaths due to childbirth complications were preventable. Now, their partners and families are determined to sound a rallying cry around this chilling yet largely ignored crisis.

Descendant | Director: Margaret Brown

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: History exists beyond what is written. The Africatown residents in Mobile, Alabama, have shared stories about their origins for generations. Their community was founded by enslaved ancestors who were transported in 1860 aboard the last known and illegal slave ship, Clotilda. Though the ship was intentionally destroyed upon arrival, its memory and legacy weren’t. Now, the long-awaited discovery of the Clotilda’s remains offers this community a tangible link to their ancestors and validation of a history so many tried to bury.

Riotsville, USA | Director: Sierra Pettengill

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: RIOTSVILLE, USA is a poetic and furious reflection on the reaction of a nation’s citizens and institutions to the rebellions of the late 1960s. This artful, riveting documentary consists entirely of archival footage that was shot by the United States military or appeared on broadcast television.

All That Breathes | Director: Shaunak Sen

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Brothers Saud and Nadeem were raised looking at a sky speckled with black kites, watching as relatives tossed meat up to these birds of prey. Muslim belief held that feeding the kites would expel troubles. Now, birds are falling from the polluted, opaque skies of New Delhi and the two brothers have made it their life’s work to care for the injured black kites.

Nothing Compares | Director: Kathryn Ferguson

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Since the beginning of her career, Sinéad O’Connor has used her powerful voice to challenge the narratives she was surrounded by while growing up in predominantly Roman Catholic Ireland. Despite her agency, depth, and perspective, O’Connor’s unflinching refusal to conform means that she has often been patronized and unfairly dismissed as an attention-seeking pop star.

Sirens | Director: Rita Baghdadi

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: True to their name, Slave to Sirens — the first and only all-woman thrash metal band in the Middle East — are utterly magnetic. Amid a backdrop of political unrest and the heartbreaking unraveling of Beirut, five bandmates form a beacon of expression, resistance, and independence. Director Rita Baghdadi follows founders and guitarists Lilas Mayassi and Shery Bechara as their tenderness, and sometimes bitterness, for one another grows in ways both unexpected and deeply moving. Joined by vocalist Maya Khairallah, bassist Alma Doumani, and drummer Tatyana Boughaba, these women negotiate their emotional journeys through young adulthood in tumultuous circumstances with grace, raw passion, and a ferocious commitment to their art. Their grit is tested as they grapple with the complexities of friendship, sexuality, and the destruction around them.

Tantura | Director: Alon Schwarz

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: The tape-recorded words “erase it” take on new weight in the context of history and war. When the state of Israel was established in 1948, war broke out and hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in its aftermath. Israelis know this as the War of Independence. Palestinians call it “Nakba” (the Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain.

The Mission | Director: Tania Anderson

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Sundance Synopsis: Offering an unprecedented level of access into the journeys of missionaries, The Mission follows four American teens as they embark on one of the most religiously significant, ideologically challenging, and culturally unifying experiences in their community: their mission to Finland. As these young people reckon with the weight of their ambassador status, the film explores the varying ways in which their work shapes how they view themselves, the world, and their theology. Steadfast in its commitment to their perspectives, this film reveals the individuals behind the suits and nametags that have come to signify the work of Mormon missionaries globally. Through snubs on street corners, difficult Finnish lessons, triumphant baptisms, tearful goodbyes, and riotous welcomes home, The Mission is a full-bodied, complex presentation of missionary life.

TikTok, Boom. | Director: Shalini Kantayya

Courtesy of Sundance Institute.
All photos are copyrighted and may be used by press only for the purpose of news or editorial coverage of Sundance Institute programs. Photos must be accompanied by a credit to the photographer and/or 'Courtesy of Sundance Institute.' Unauthorized use, alteration, reproduction or sale of logos and/or photos is strictly prohibited.

Sundance Synopsis: Dissecting one of the most influential platforms of the contemporary social media landscape, TikTok, Boom. examines the algorithmic, sociopolitical, economic, and cultural influences and impact of the history-making app. This rigorous exploration balances a genuine interest in the TikTok community and its innovative mechanics with a healthy skepticism around the security issues, global political challenges, and racial biases behind the platform. A cast of Gen Z subjects, helmed by influencer Feroza Aziz, remains at its center, making this one of the most needed and empathetic films exploring what it means to be a digital native.

We Need to Talk About Cosby | Director: W. Kamau Bell

Sundance Synopsis: During his nearly 50 years in show business, Bill Cosby became one of the most recognizable Black celebrities in America. With a career that included an astronomical rise on television in the mid-1960s; work in children’s programming and education; legendary stand-up performances and albums; and an epoch-defining hit sitcom, The Cosby Show, Cosby was a model of Black excellence for millions of Americans. But now, thanks to the brave and painful testimonies of dozens of women, we know there was a sinister reality to the man once extolled as “America’s Dad.”

It's always a good day when the MTR Network can circle back to a festival favorite and announce when and where people will get their shot at watching a movie for themselves. Early March 16, 2022, news on the one deal we've anxiously awaited since Sundance 2022 wrapped is here: Blumhouse and Prime Video have secured worldwide rights for horror-drama Nanny from first-time feature writer/director Nikyatu Jusu.

Nanny not only premiered during the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it ultimately won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. This marked the first time a horror film took top honors at the Sundance Film Festival. According to Deadline, the Prime Video/Blumhouse collaboration beat out SPC and Neon, among others, to secure the rights in what's reportedly a deal in the 7 million dollar range.

Nanny stars Anna Diop (Us) as a Senegalese immigrant nanny, piecing together a new life in New York City while caring for the child of an Upper East Side family, who is forced to confront a concealed truth that threatens to shatter her American Dream. Michelle Monaghan (The Craft: Legacy, Gone Baby Gone), Sinqua Walls (The 15:17 to Paris, Resort to Love), Morgan Spector (The Gilded Age), and Rose Decker (Mare of Easttown) also star.

“Knowing my first feature, Nanny, is now among a roster of provocative and iconic work at Amazon is rewarding. Coupled with Blumhouse’s recognizability in the world of genre, horror specifically, I’m excited to be in the warm embrace of a team at the intersection of bold content and indie filmmaking sensibilities. My hope is that this acquisition stands as a testament to their continued bravery in ushering in unique voices,” said Nikyatu Jusu.

Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum shared: “We’re proud to have writer/director Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny as part of our slate for Amazon. It’s a gem of a horror film that combines impressive filmmaking and powerful storytelling, and is worthy of the Grand Jury Prize it was awarded at Sundance.”

“With Nanny, Nikaytu Jusu has crafted a film that is as haunting as it is powerful,” commented Julie Rapaport, head of movies at Amazon Studios. “From the exceptional performances to its strong visual language, we can’t wait to share Nanny with our global audience and to continue our longstanding collaboration with Blumhouse.”

The movie was acquired from Topic Studios, Stay Gold Features and LinLay Productions. The deal negotiated by CAA Media Finance.

An Innovator Tribute was given to Don Katz, Founder and Executive Chairman of Audible, Inc. Since its 1995 launch, Katz’s company Audible has established itself as a leading creator and provider of premium audio storytelling.

The second annual Icon Tribute (presented by Gotham Board Member Jonathan Majors), created to call attention to the boldness, artistry, and impact of a filmmaker from a marginalized community whose work has not been previously recognized by the organization in its previous awards history was awarded to the legendary late actor, filmmaker, and activist Sidney Poitier. Accepting the award were members of the Poitier family – Anika, Pamela and Sherri Poitier.

Sidney Poitier Initiative

Jonathan Majors also announced the creation of The Gotham Sidney Poitier Initiative, an ambitious set of programs developed around the spirit Sidney Poitier brought to the world as he broke down barriers in the film industry and the minds of audiences. SPI aims to expand on this legacy to support the next generation of filmmakers. Aligned closely with the priorities set by the Poitier family, the initiative will encompass the areas of mentorship, scholarship, project funding, and career advancement. The SPI Founders Committee is a collective of artists - actors, directors, producers, writers, and executives - who have aligned with the shared goal of shaping this initiative to optimally support Sidney Poitier’s living legacy.

Also announced during the ceremony:

Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp welcomed the presence of Gotham-supported filmmakers from two of the organization’s most recent initiatives – the previously announced Fellows of the new Documentary Development Initiative in partnership with HBO Documentary Films, as well as announcing the latest five graduate student winners in the Focus Features & JetBlue Showcase.

Focus Features & JetBlue Short Film Showcase

The program is designed to discover and empower a diverse group of emerging filmmakers and foster multi-platform distribution of their work. The winners of the fourth annual Focus Features & JetBlue Short Film Showcase will receive a $10,000 grant and have their films shown for twelve months on JetBlue’s seatback entertainment systems under the “Gotham Selects” movie category and on Focus Features digital streaming platforms. The winning filmmakers will also receive ongoing mentorship and workshopping opportunities from The Gotham and “Every House” Soho House worldwide membership.
