This year marks 80 years of Batman and it's only fitting that DC's worldwide celebration included a birthday party on Saturday, March 30th, to celebrate this pop culture icons legacy. In honor of Gotham's Caped Crusader, a panel of icons, legends, and fan favorites came together at WonderCon.

The panel featured Jim Lee, David Mazouz (Gotham), Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), Lee Meriwether (Batman), Roger Craig Smith (Batman: Arkham Origins), and Grace Randolph (Beyond the Trailer).

Happy Birthday, Batman:

The panel unveiled a pretty epic one-of-a-kind Batman-themed birthday cake to mark the occasion. Blueprint, a digital lifestyle learning platform - designed the Bat-themed cake. It included 3D flying bates, a Batmobile and Gotham City's skyline wrapped around the base tier. Panelist and fans naturally commemorated the moment with a photo.

Grace Randolph, Jim Lee - DC Publisher, Chief Creative Officer - DC Entertainment, David Mazouz, Lee Meriwether, Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader, and Roger Craig Smith. Designed and created by Bluprint cake artist, Ashley Holt

While fans of all ages shared slices of Bat-cake, the panelist discussed Batman's long run from his first appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939 to present day interactions. Kevin Conroy shared what made the character important to him saying, “Batman has no powers, but he doesn't let tragedy overcome him.” David Mazouz chimed in to say, “Batman turns tragedy into strength. He turns pain into something positive for everyone around him.” Lee Meriwether reminisced and shared her fond memories of working on the 1960s Batman film with Adam West.

Batman to be Inducted into Character Hall of Fame

Later in the panel, Jim Lee (DC Chief Creative Officer and DC Publisher) announced that Batman would be the first inductee into the Comic-Con Museum's Character Hall of Fame. The inaugural ceremony will take place on opening night, July 17, 2019, at The Comic-Con Museum’s future venue in San Diego’s Balboa Park. As part of a fundraising event and in celebration of Batman’s 80th Anniversary, the event will feature displays of authentic props and memorabilia, and special appearances by artists, actors and other creative talents who have contributed to making Batman a global icon of popular culture. Tickets will be made available to the public beginning on June 3rd, 2019. So if the 50th San Diego Comic-Con is on your 2019 to do list, you may want to think about picking up tickets to this exclusive event.

DC Universe Discount

If you missed the special DC Universe stream free event there's still a chance to access the streaming network for next to nothing. All new members who sign up for DC Universe between March 29, 2019, and April 4, 2019, 11:59 pm EST, will pay $0.080 for their first month of service.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #40-42: Are We Gods Yet?

$

The Wicked + Divine keeps pressing on. While my reviews have not been steady, the comic has been and we've also had a chance to start from the beginning and do some audio reviews of WicDiv for Comic Book Book Club. So, when last we left, Persephone had relinquished her godhood and aborted her pregnancy. But luckily, there's still a way to break the cycle. The Pantheon just has to get on the same page and figure out what it is. This is where we all snort and whisper "fat chance" because as you'll recall, these are not only humans with god-like powers, they're also teenagers.

There's a darkness in the world, and we're going to stop it.

Issue 40 focuses mainly on Baal. Because he still believes in The Great Darkness that Minananke has convinced him is coming, he turns his final concert into one giant sacrifice. Because WicDiv is meta af, it's told from the point of view of found footage. Excited concertgoers not realizing they're headed to their doom, Baal leaving a heartfelt video message for his family, security cameras at the arena. Minananke is just hoping to utilize the death energy to create a psychic plague. Thank god(s?) Persephone Laura saves everyone's lives.

Why didn't I get my shit together quicker?

Laura is no longer the Destroyer, she's going to be the savior. And issue 41 has her breaking Cassandra and the Norns from their prison, saving Mimir, and finding Lucifer and the other heads. As soon as Laura gets Lucifer's lips unsewn, she drops the Minananke bomb and now there's just more pieces to the puzzle. The one thing Laura knows she can fix, is getting Lucifer, Tara and Inanna their bodies back. And here folks is where I cried. Tara, whose struggle has always been people not looking past her body to see who she is, decides to give her chance at a body to Mimir. Then Baphomet (Nergal if you're nasty), uses his power as an underworld god, to give Lucifer, Inanna and Mimir the Morrigan's dead bodies. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. He's forced to let her go forever but he also brings three people back. The end is always a beginning.

I really did want to live

Now that Laura has upended Minananke's plans, she has to get everyone on-board with her plan ... that she won't tell anyone ... because they have to "see it" first. Though Cassandra calls bullshit on Laura's vagueness, they all follow her because so far, she's the one with the answers. First they find out what's causing The Great Darkness and if you were paying attention back in the 1920s special, you know it's Woden from the 1831 Pantheon. Minananke's kept her alive to use her to power all sorts of horrors. Baal kills her and it's a mercy.

It's the first of many deaths in issue 42. Death comes in threes and our 1831 Woden's merciful death is followed by present-day Woden's bloody massacre at the hands of Minananke (can't say I'm sad about that one. He was a dick). And finally, our dear Baphomet, Nergal, Cameron. He's said good-bye to the Morrigan, he's brought back Luci and Inanna. He was never built for this fight and he knows that. So he sacrifices himself to bring back Dionysus. No more do-overs. No more resurrections. They can't all make it out alive.

Best Laid Plans?

  • What is Laura's plan? She has to make them "see" before she can tell them. They've seen 1831 Woden. They've seen the disembodied heads. What else do the rest of Pantheon need to see?
  • Nergal's good-bye. Just thinking about the relationship that he's had with Dio and the Morrigan and how it culminated in his sacrifice and redemption was a masterful piece of writing. The payoff was *muah* chef's kiss.

Quick shout-out to Bombsheller. I was able to attend their Wicked+Divine party at Emerald City Comic Con in March. Unfortunately, they are closing but you can use the code STAYBADASS to get 20% until May 19th.

The Sisterhood: Reflections from Awesome Con 2019 (Part 1)

I think women are amazing and women's friendships are like a sisterhood...we should see more of it in television and film.
~Laurie Holden (Andrea, The Walking Dead)

The Women of Sci Fi panel at Awesome Con introduces the idea that science fiction is both an access point for dynamic roles for women, and a Hollywood status quo.  Featuring Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher, Star Trek the Next Generation), Mary McDonnell (President Roslin, Battlestar Galactica), and Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, The Flash)  the actresses discussed the importance of mentoring and the impact science fiction has had on introducing new ideas of women leaders to public awareness.   One of the critical takeaways from the panel was the portion of the discussion helmed by Mary and Gates, where they focused on the lack of true relationship between women during their time in the spotlight.  Counselor Troi and Dr. Crusher rarely shared any screen time on Star Trek the Next Generation, and when they did it, it was in the most awkward of circumstances-calisthenics.  President Roslin had very little significant screen time with other women on Battlestar Galactica.   When the women on screen in these shows were featured, it was opposite men, and often the perspective of men was prioritized, even when Dr. Crusher was discussing her son Wesley with Captain Picard.  Often if they were in scenes with other women, it was as adversaries.  In hindsight, the devaluation of the importance of the relationship between mother and son may have led to audiences not connecting with Wesley at all in a way that was appropriate.  He is often cited as the worst part of the show, instead of being seen as the confused and growing teenager he actually was.

Crusher and Troi, Star Trek the Next Generation/ Photo Credit: Netflix

I sat on this piece for the last eight weeks primarily because what Mary and Gates stated resonated in such a profound way.  Much of our entertainment, while entertaining, is rife with one note shallow relationships.  Among men, it is rare to find a true friendship or relationship not born of machismo or testosterone filled stereotypes.  Among women, it is rare to find true friendships or relationships portrayed on screen that don't have as a central focus women worried about their romantic status.  Among women and men, it is rare to find a relationship not rooted in lust or a will they/won't they dynamic.

It makes, in some respects, for a sad state of viewing.  It is also one of the reasons I believe that shows like Supernatural have lasted so long.  Say what you will about them running out of monsters and supernatural beings to hunt, what has kept this show on air for 15 years is the special bond and relationship that exists between Sam and Dean Winchester.  It is complex, at times hyperbolic, but often times deeply emotional and vulnerable in a way that men are not usually allowed to relate to one another.  While there is a seedy corner of the internet that have notions of a sexual relationship between the brothers (eww), those who are really committed to this show are dedicated to the deep love and the complex nature of family that it shows.

The panel caused me to reflect on shows that I enjoy the most currently, and Gates really helped me to understand the reason I enjoyed them was because I saw the kind of female relationships and interactions I value, and that need to be modeled on screen more.  Star Trek Discovery is hands down one of the best shows on television in the first two quarters of 2019.  Aside from really returning to the root of exploration and equity, it shows women in positions of leadership and in relationship to one another outside of their desire for romance.  Michael develops a strong and nurturing friendship with Tilly and the other women on the bridge.  The mentor/mentee relationship between her and Georgiou defines her in ways that impact her after Georgiou's Terran counterpart crosses over.  We see women reflecting the relationships that exist in the real world in ways that have been missing from modern television.

Another show that blew me away with the portrayal of women in relationship to one another was season 3 of Lucifer.   While the women were brought together via their affiliation with the main character, the friendships they developed (Maze and Linda, Maze providing support for single mom Chloe, Charlotte, Chloe and Ella-it goes on) were refreshing to watch, and sorely missed and lacking in the season 4 Netflix save.

Speaking of the panel which also featured the Flash's Danielle Panabaker, Supergirl has been the only Flarrowverse show to consistently showcase women in healthy relationship one another.  The central theme of sisterhood and friendship drives much of the storyline and conflict inherent in the show.  Of the Flarrowverse shows it is so far the only one to have avoided the Season 4 slump, having shown steady improvement in both writing and acting season after season, and one can argue that the driving theme of sisterhood and family is a large reason for this.

Relationships are not one note, and my hope is moving forward, our entertainment will continue to evolve to examine and portray the relationship between women in ways that are dynamic and interesting.

In Part 2, I hope to pull together a list of show recommendations that have the type of portrayals I'm longing for, that many of us are longing for.

Heathen #6: LADY PIRATES!

We've talked about Heathen before. The comic by Natasha Alterici, follows Aydis, a Viking woman who is exiled by her community because of her same-sex relationship and decides to take her fate into her own hands by challenging the gods and their rules. Since its launch, Aydis has faced a number of Norse gods and even linked up with a crew of female pirates, and now Heathen embarks on a new adventure.

The comic is being developed by Constantin Film and Prime Universe Films. The screenplay is being written by Kerry Williamson (What Happened to Monday) and now Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen, Miss Bala) is attached as director.

It will be interesting to see what this team does with Alterici's book which has a modern-sensibility set in ancient times. No word on casting yet but this will be a great vehicle for a new, young actress.

Heathen is published by Vault Comics. Heathen #7 is out in comic bookstores now.

Score Composer Announced at D23 Expo

It was announced (August 24, 2019) that Joseph Trapanese (The Greatest Showman, Oblivion) is on board to compose the original score for Lady and the Tramp. Joseph Trapanese is best known for his sleek score work for blockbuster films like “Tron: Legacy,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “Oblivion,” and the “Raid” series.  As a composer, arranger, and producer for movie, television, theater, and video game music, he has collaborated with a number of mainstream musical acts.

About the Composer:

Joseph Trapanese Headshot (photo credit Thomas Mikusz)

Trapanese first major break came in 2010 when he worked with Daft Punk on the sweeping digital soundtrack to Disney's “Tron” reboot/sequel.

Trapanese followed that success by creating a score with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park for the American release of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film “The Raid: Redemption” (he would continue without Shinoda in 2014 with “The Raid 2”).

That same year, he helped with arrangements on a handful of tracks for M83's breakthrough hit “Hurry Up, We're Dreaming,” which led to the pair's collaboration on the 2013 Tom Cruise sci-fi epic “Oblivion”.  For 2017’s “The Greatest Showman,” Trapanese worked alongside Pasek & Paul and John Debney, producing songs and co-composing the score.

Notable solo scores include “Robin Hood” (2018), “Only The Brave” (2017), the landmark rap biopic “Straight Outta Compton” (2015), “Earth to Echo” (2014), and the second and third installments of the “Divergent” series, “Insurgent” (2015) and “Allegiant” (2016).  For television, he has composed scores for USA’s “Unsolved” (2018);  Amazon’s “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” (2017); ABC’s “Quantico” (2016-17), Freeform’s “Dead of Summer” (2016), and Disney XD’s “Tron: Uprising” (2012).  Video game scores include EA’s “Need for Speed Payback” (2017) and Ubisoft’s “The Crew” (2014).

In the studio and in concert, in addition to Daft Punk, M83, and Mike Shinoda, he has worked with Dr. Dre, Zedd, Kelly Clarkson, Dierks Bentley, Kendrick Lamar, Moby, Aloe Blacc, Alessia Cara, Haim, The Glitch Mob, Active Child, Halsey, Sohn, John Newman, Dia Frampton, 3OH!3, Steven Price, and James Newton Howard.

Born in Jersey City, Trapanese earned his B.A. in classical composition from the Manhattan School of Music. He went on to study at UCLA for his M.A. and taught electronic music composition at the school from 2008-2011.  In 2016, he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In 2013, alongside a tenacious group of composers, artists, and musicians, Trapanese founded The Echo Society.  Aiming to inspire each other and the community around them, the group creates and performs new music showcasing the unique talents and environments of Los Angeles.

Disney+ By the Numbers

Disney+, the next big streaming service, brings together several of content providers owned by The House of Mouse. The service is providing a host of content from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, National Geographic, and the OG Disney films, as well as a bevy of new content available at launch. With all of that content, Disney is also offering a variety of ways to access the platform, with plans and options for its die-hard fans and service bundles with its subsidiaries priced to reel in new customers. We crunched the numbers to see how their options compare, so you can pick the one that works for you.

Plans & Prices

Right now, Disney+ is offering three basic plans: $6.99/monthly, $69.99/yearly or $140 Founder's Circle price for D23 members. The Founder's Circle option locks members into a 3-year plan with an overall savings of 33% per year. This option is only available to D23 members but if you sign-up for a free D23 general membership and purchase the plan by the end of the weekend, you can lock in this savings.

The next best option is bundling. Because Disney owns ESPN and has majority control over Hulu, when Disney+ launches in November, Hulu members will have the option to bundle their service with Disney and ESPN for $12.99/month. Because the price for each service is relatively low (ESPN is $4.99/month and Hulu with ads is $5.99/month) this is a steal. And if you're someone who has a premium Hulu plan at $11.99, this deal will give you live sports and Disney content with a small price bump.

Right now, it's still unknown if you will be able to purchase a Disney+ annual subscription separately and link it to your Hulu account but given that Disney has been standardizing user log-ins across platforms such as Marvel.com and Disney Movie Rewards, it would stand to reason that they want to consolidate their users and track how their customers are accessing their content.

And if you're someone who just wants all the Disney+ content you can handle, the streaming service has more than enough to keep you occupied. Currently, they've promised a live-action Lady and the Tramp, an original Christmas film, Noelle, starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader, an original Star Wars show, The Mandalorian, a Jeff Goldblum docuseries and High School Musical spin-off series at launch. Not to mention, their deep back-catalog of Marvel, Star Wars and Disney films, as well as, Disney Channel movies and shows.

Whatever plan you choose, adding Disney+ to your streaming services will not be a waste of money.

Disney+ launches on Nov. 12th. For more information go to Disney+ to preview the platform.

Leaving Neverland-A Hometown Girl’s Perspective

$

I'm living in that 21st Century, doing something mean to it

Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it

Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it

I guess every superhero need his theme music

No one man should have all that power

The clock's ticking I just count the hours

Stop tripping I'm tripping off the power

(21st Century schizoid man)

~Kanye West, "Power"

That song was released well after Michael Jackson had passed away, but if ever a song intro encapsulated a man, I believe this one does.  Craig Jenkins alludes to the amount of power that Michael carried during his time in the business in his article "No One Deserves as Much Power as Michael Jackson Had."

Make no mistake-Michael was (and still is) a God to many all over this little blue orb called Earth.  Whenever Michael went on tour, the medical staff on site worked overtime.  So many people fainted from pure joy and being overwhelmed at being in the presence of his musical greatness.  He was the epitome of the bootstrap narrative-born into a large family in the small industrial town of Gary, Indiana, he went from a low/working income life to superstardom.  His Neverland Ranch was the size of a small town and one of many homes he owned.  Unlike a lot of Black artists who either had to gain fame overseas before coming home to garner respect or just settle for American audiences, he grew up before the public's eye, becoming increasingly successful and increasingly talented gaining the respect, adoration, and love of audiences all over the globe.  Their defense of his increasing "eccentricities" bordered on rabid.   Leaving Neverland shows some of these responses following Wade Robson's interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana.  The photo that accompanies this piece was one I took in Miller, IN and is one of many such murals in the city.  Another such mural is an image of Michael and his brothers performing at the height of his popularity painted on a shuttered theater just south of 6th Avenue on Broadway. Despite all the graffiti that pops up in Gary, the Jackson murals are rarely, if ever, touched.  The remnant family who lived at 2300 Jackson Street when I was growing up were consistently irritated by looky-loos who jumped off of I-94 to get a glimpse of and a photo in front of the house where Michael was born and partially raised.  Following his death, the location became a shrine.  Having a conversation with most individuals from Gary about anything negative related to Michael ends in the same denials we saw him giving, the same denials that existed when he was alive during the periods of accusation that took place.

I want to own that I made allowances as well.  When I was younger, I didn't WANT to believe that Michael, a voice of a generation, whose music had practically raised me, was possible of such heinous acts.  We all heard the explanations-he has a childlike personality, he was a victim of horrendous physical and emotional abuse by his dad, he's just a big kid.  I did believe it was highly inappropriate that a grown man was sleeping in beds with prepubescent kids that were not his own (if I am honest, even if they were his kids I would have side-eyed it).  When he paid off the family, I squinted, but he explained it cost less to do that than to fight it.   I bought it.  As recently as 12 years ago I bought it, as I watched universities across the nation settle lawsuits not because they claimed responsibility but because they didn't have the money for a protracted legal fight.  Additionally, I was surrounded by people who were also borderline rabid in their defense of the man.  An environment so strong, so toxic, and so numerous makes you reconsider opening your mouth.

Then came the second trial.  The drawings of genitalia.  The testimony of the house staff.  I grew increasingly uncomfortable, but still stayed quiet about my opinion, continued jamming to the music, even introducing my kids to it.  I have a YouTube video of them dancing to They Don't Really Care About us as they watch the This Is It documentary.  I remember feeling gut punched when Michael's death was announced.  He just couldn't escape his demons, I thought.  I mourned with the world.  I missed Wade Robson's interview with Matt Lauer when it came out because by then I had stopped watching the Today show regularly and being in a doctoral program and parenting took up most of my time and attention.  During this period as well, I had come to terms with my own sexual abuse at the hands of a family friend, having sat on that information for 22 years before sharing it. Having my revelations be met with "why didn't you say anything?" and "well what did YOU do?" from those I should have been able to trust to protect me led me to think ”well gee, maybe what I watched you say about other victims of rape and abuse kept me quiet, and now that I'm sharing and getting the same responses, I may as well keep my mouth shut.”

In conversations with Shanna, my Supergirl podcast partner and my friend, she expressed that individuals are caught up on the fact that Jackson’s accusers are grown men. People forget that the acts he's accused of took place when these grown men were impressionable and vulnerable children.  It also deeply ignores the fact that how a person comes to 1) understand what has happened to them in an abusive situation; 2) finds an emotional place where they are comfortable sharing that with others; and 3) how a person will express how they feel about their abuse varies from person to person.  Add to all of these a society...really a PLANET that scoffs at the idea of male victimization, and it is completely understandable "why they waited so long."

I was sick on March 4th so I stayed home from work and for some inexplicable reason decided to watch both parts.  Part one was heartbreaking, especially as I looked at James Safechuck's eyes as he was describing his experience.  Listening to his voice, I heard a tone similar to my own when I disclosed my own abuse.  There are many in the online sphere who are denouncing these men for not being hysterical, but anyone with any amount of emotional intelligence can watch this documentary and see the trauma, confusion, hurt, and shame that comes across as Wade and James describe their experiences.   The second part of the documentary made me want to delete everything about Michael from my life-his music, documentaries, photographs-all of it.  Let's be clear-this man was a savant.  He wasn't immature.  He was a shrewd businessman, and he completely and disgustingly groomed these kids.  For the people saying 'well he can't defend himself he's dead"-did you not pay attention to the first two trials and damn near two decades of denials, interviews, and words from his OWN MOUTH denying this shit?  He had his chance.  And yes, Wade and James are grown now, but they were groomed from a time of great vulnerability to believe in and trust this man at his word, and he violated that trust with his sexual perversion.  After he was through with them, he only called on them as cover when others decided to try to get justice, but again, we live in a world that doesn't believe women when they are sexually abused or assaulted, and men are afforded even less with regard to sexual assault.  In addition to our society’s pervasive homophobia, the idea that one of their beloved idols engaged in such heinous acts (which have NOTHING to do with sexual orientation by the way) with young boys is just something that they cannot connect the dots on.

I can connect the dots.  I heard their pain.  Their pain was real.  Their trauma was real.

I believe them.  Michael did this.

And Michael can rot in hell for it.

TitanShade: Noir Lives in a Gritty New Metropolis

I love noir. There just something about that grim and gritty pulp-filled genre that just reels me in. It's a big part of the reason why I'm unabashedly addicted to Turner Classic Movies. The last good noir story to reel me in was horror novella by Cassandra Khaw called Hammers on Bone. So, I seriously down to give a noir fantasy thriller called TitanShade promising to give noir a whole new stomping ground to play a read.

TitanShade Cover

TitanShade Synopsis:

Carter's a homicide cop in Titanshade, an oil boomtown where 8-tracks are state of the art, disco rules the radio, and all the best sorcerers wear designer labels. It's also a metropolis teetering on the edge of disaster. As its oil reserves run dry, the city's future hangs on a possible investment from the reclusive amphibians known as Squibs.

But now negotiations have been derailed by the horrific murder of a Squib diplomat. The pressure's never been higher to make a quick arrest, even as Carter's investigation leads him into conflict with the city's elite. Undermined by corrupt coworkers and falsified evidence, and with a suspect list that includes power-hungry politicians, oil magnates, and mad scientists, Carter must find the killer before the investigation turns into a witch-hunt and those closest to him pay the ultimate price on the filthy streets of Titanshade.

I had an opportunity to send author Dan Stout a few questions reading his debut novel and his answers just make me wonder why it took me so long to discover him in the first place.
What is it about noir that you like the most?

My favorite noir usually has a sense of decay about it. Moral, emotional, or physical, it often seems like things are falling apart, and only held together by a weird mix of delusion, denial, and blind optimism. That sense of decay is also strong in the Gothic and Southern Gothic tradition and is why I’m drawn to authors like Flannery O’Connor.

It never occurred to me before, but I wonder if that’s at least partially because I worked in construction for so long. I spent so much of my life preventing decay and repairing damaged structures, that decrepit and declining forms may hold a dark allure for me

What's your favorite noir film? Why?

I think you’d get a different answer depending on the day you ask me. So maybe it’s only because Southern Gothic is on my mind, but right now I’d say Night of the Hunter. It’s beautifully filmed, Robert Mitchum is terrifying as the villain, and I really do feel for the children he’s pursuing.

And if you’re into that kind of thing, Mitchum’s Love-Hate speech gets a fantastic reworking in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. It’s a pretty great example of how art can be repurposed and revitalized in a new context, while still honoring the source material.

Who are your favorite noir-ere private investigators? Why?  I’ve got a soft spot of Dashiell Hammett’s Continental Op. There’s something so wonderfully crisp in Hammett’s prose, and books like Red Harvest are completely over the top.

Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins is a great character, and I’m pretty sure he was the first noir investigator who wasn’t a straight white male. Easy’s voice was so refreshing the first time I read it, and Mosley makes the post-WWII setting sway and snarl; it’s great stuff!

What's the "elevator pitch" you'd give for Titanshade if you had 2 minutes to sell a reader on your book? “It’s MEN IN BLACK meets CHINATOWN in a 70s-era fantasy world.” Then I’d stand in awkward silence and watch the floor numbers go by for the next minute and a half.
What do you like best about your main character, Carter? Why?  I love that his world-weary attitude is the result of being a disappointed idealist, rather than a bitter cynic. That touch of warmth in him makes him much more fun to write than if he were simply a burned-out nihilist. It also makes the moments when he connects with others feel much more grounded and sincere.
What was the most difficult part of the world building when you were creating the city Titanshade? Not getting stuck down the rabbit hole of research! I don’t do general worldbuilding so much as focus on one small thing and dig down until it creates an interesting or unexpected result. That makes it a lot more fun for me to create, but it can potentially drag me down some distracting side paths.
The most fun thing to research for this book? One particularly satisfying moment was when I talked to a couple architects and designers about how the buildings in Titanshade could be built without disrupting the geo-vents that keep the city warm even in the middle of the ice plains. I pitched them my ideas and they universally gave me a thumbs-up (and suggested a couple more options). I was surprisingly relieved that my construction street cred was going to stay intact.
Strangest factoid you discovered while researching?

While searching for an Earthly analogue for the exposed biting jaws of Mollenkampi, I found out about baboon “war faces”. Some baboons flip their lips inside out to make their jaws appear more ferocious, and there’s all kinds of great photos and documentation of this happening. It’s really surreal to see, and it made a pretty great way to waste an hour or so!
Top five songs (on eight-track of course) you'd never leave home without

Okay, in no particular order:

  • Unbelievers, Vampire Weekend,
  • Mambo Sun, T Rex,
  • I Feel Love, Donna Summers,
  • Old School, Danger Doom,
  • Apple in the Fall, The Quiet American

Which makes for a pretty eclectic 8-track, and points out that I’ve been listening to fairly mellow stuff lately. Must be the winter weather!

Who inspires you to keep writing?  Besides debt collectors? My fiancé. Mandy is an amazing person, and her background in theatre means that she knows how the submission/rejection process can wear a person down. Plus, there’s nobody in the world I’d rather sit around and talk to about story, character, and all the ways we can communicate with an audience.
What the best piece of advice you've ever been given? Well, it wasn’t advice exactly, but as a kid my dad would make me do my chores over and over until they were right. It took a long time, but I finally figured out that it’s a lot faster if you just slow down and do things right the first time.
What do you like best about writing groups/communities?

I love the various writing communities I’ve been a part of. My favorite thing about them is the variety of opinions/experiences you’ll find. For example, in my critique groups I’d read someone’s story and think I understood exactly how it worked, but when I heard other the members’ critiques I’d see the work with fresh eyes. If you can find a community with a talented, diverse membership, it can be like jet fuel for your own writing.
What's the wildest idea you've ever had for a story? Did it ever make it to publication? If so, where can interested readers find it?

One of the most interesting stories I’ve had published is about a young drug addict who’s left as a sacrifice to a dragon in post-apocalyptic Detroit. She saves herself by introducing the dragon to her drug of choice: heroin. It was originally published in The Stonecoast Review, and is currently available at Curious Fictions. (https://curiousfictions.com/stories/493-dan-stout-riding-the-dragon)
Do you have any advice for writers who want to focus on writing short fiction?

Man, I love short fiction, and this is a fantastic time to be writing it! There’s a ton of markets to send your work, and the ease of sharing on social media means that even relatively obscure markets can see a story break out into a wider audience.

My best piece of advice for short story authors is to not be afraid to experiment.

For me, writing short stories was a way to try out differences in voice, style, and genre in a greatly compressed timeframe. I think of it like rapid prototyping—each story was a chance to tinker and learn with relatively little time investment.

Of course, everyone’s process is different, and what worked for me may not work for others. But if anyone wants to experiment with various modes and voices, short fiction is a phenomenal way to do it.

Can fans expect more stories set in Titanshade?

Absolutely! I’m already polishing up the sequel, and I’ve got several short-form works in mind that explore different aspects of the broader world or focus on cool details that I’d like a chance to expand slightly.
About The Author:

7th Annual Musical Anatomy of a Superhero: Michael Giacchino on Making the Music of Spider-Man

Spider-Man Far From Home is not only the highest grossing Spider-Man film of all time but it is also well on its way to joining the MCU Billion Dollar Club. The two Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films truly capture the essence of teenage Peter Parker and the idea that "With great power, there must also come great responsibility." One of the elements that help cement these films as the best live action Spider-Man films is the score. Composer Michael Giacchino is known for his great scores in films like Star Trek, Bad Times at the El Royale, Doctor Strange and both MCU Spider-Man films. Giacchino's scores always connect at the emotional core of the characters on screen even at their smallest, most subtle moments.

Giacchino attended this year's San Diego Comic-Con and participated in the 7th Annual Musical Anatomy of a Superhero panel. We got to talk to him for a little bit after about how he goes about scoring superhero films and other genres and why connecting with the core of the character of Peter Parker is so important to scoring Spider-Man.

Amazon's The Boys had a big presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year. MTR covered the Red Carpet premiere and got to chat with some of the cast. Jessie T. Usher is playing A-Train, member of The Seven and "Fastest Man alive". Kriss chats with him about what motivates A-Train, the "black moments" A-Train experiences on the show and how the character is written to give the audience complicated feelings. There are definitely going to be times when you're not going to like A-Train but at the same time, you'll feel for him as well. The Boys does a great job of taking characters you should hate and squeezing some sympathy out of you for them.

Stay tuned for more interviews with the cast from the red carpet and check out my non-spoiler review here (The spoiler review for Season 1 will be out on Monday for Premium members).

Maybe Another Story About New Yorkers Isn't So Drab

Hannah Pearl Utt as Rachel Gurner and Jen Tullock as Jackie Gurner

Living in New York City is hard.  Being the lesbian daughter of a pretentious theater actor whom you live with above a theater along with your childish older sister and her kid is even harder.  *exhale*  Finding out your dead mother is not only alive but is also a famous actress on a soap opera filmed a couple blocks away is the type of story that deserves some screen time! Director, writer, and actress Hannah Pearl Utt as Rachel Gurner crafts a very captivating family dynamic with Before You Know It that checks all the boxes of a critically acclaimed indie film.  It’s savvy, but quirky.  Endearing in all its most pleasurable moments here stands a film that simply wishes to tell us a story.

There is Chemistry in the Casting

Co-written by Jen Tullock who also plays Jackie Gurner, the story here is nothing without the life it is given through it’s casting.  Judith Light plays Sherrell, the estranged mother walking through life on a red carpet of flashing lights, and dresses bedazzled by the best designers.  What she has in fame, she lacks in family and balance.  Mandy Patinkin stars as Jackie and Rachel’s father Mel Garner,  an actor with enough notoriety and acclaim in the theater community to literally mouth-fart some of it away on stage.  It’s easy to see how things ended up here without the need for any deep diving expositions or flashbacks.  Oona Yaffe plays Dodge, Jackie’s daughter, in the typical troupe of parent birth’s kid, kid raises parent and yet what she brings to the character is so refreshing and wonderful.  The chemistry here feels  like it was put together in a lab, with added help from Mike Coulter as Charles and Arica Himmel as his daughter Olivia with the most gorgeously big and beautiful eyes you’ll see this year.

Arica Himmel as Olivia and Oona Yaffe as Dodge Gurner

Wonder-full on the Weekend

If you’re looking for a reason to matinee your Saturday, this might be just what the doctor ordered.  Before You Know It is the type of film that sets the stage for Utt and Tullock to have long, promising careers working either behind or in front of the camera.  Hopefully they’ll continue to do both.

What's New In Books: September 3rd, New Releases

"Big book season" is officially here and it's a great time to see what's new in books. There's definitely something exciting on offer for every type of reader.  September 3rd new releases, particularly in sci-fi and fantasy, looks to be the start of good things for your fall reading list.

Given that my life revolves around an ever-growing book library, I thought's I'd share what's on my radar and soon to be on my reading list in the coming days. Consider this fair warning, because September's jam-packed with titles just itching to find their way on to some bookshelves.

Week one was a hit to the wallet because I bought almost everything on my watch-list in one go. I know, I have a problem...it's fine, really. But there are a few titles that definitely need to be on everyone's reading list for the year.

E-Book Purchases

Given that I don't actually live in a library, there are some authors with long-running series that I switched over to e-book. They're also my first read since e-books download at 9 pm PT instead of midnight.

This time, mystery/thrillers filled my late-night reading-jones. Ann Cleeves and J.D. Robb are very different writers but both offer up intriguing mysteries worth the 1-click.

September 3rd New Releases - Ann Cleeves

Official Synopsis: In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father’s funeral takes place. Once loved and cherished, the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team.

A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back into the community he thought he had left behind, as deadly secrets hidden at its heart are revealed, and his past and present collide.

Quick Take: 20 years in, and Ann Cleeves's ready to introduce a new detective to fans. Told with plenty of dry wit and multilayered problem solving, The Long Call is a mid-paced mystery perfect for the reader who likes prodigal stories where the secrets unburied do more than just follow predictable patterns.

September 3rd New Releases - J. D. Robb

Official Synopsis: She calls herself Lady Justice. And once she has chosen a man as her target, she turns herself into a tall blonde or a curvaceous redhead, makes herself as alluring and seductive as possible to them. Once they are in her grasp, they are powerless. The first victim is wealthy businessman Nigel McEnroy. His company’s human resources department has already paid out settlements to a couple of his young victims—but they don’t know that his crimes go far beyond workplace harassment. Lady Justice knows. And in one shocking night of brutality, she makes him pay a much steeper price. Now Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, are combing through the evidence of McEnroy’s secret life. Meanwhile, Lady Justice’s criminal crusade is escalating rapidly, and if Eve can’t stop this vigilante, there’s no telling how much blood may be spilled.

Quick Take: This long-running series (this is book 49) just keeps gaining momentum and depth as Robb leverages great character development and world-building to craft this police procedural with a healthy dose of humor, heart, and themes that showcase its heroine Lt. Eve Dallas and her compatriots at their best. If you've never read an Eve Dallas thriller, this is absolutely NOT the place to start. But if you're an existing fan, this book has plenty of unique elements threaded through its familiar environment. Vendetta is a quick but thoroughly enjoyable read.

Physical Book Purchases

The book collector in me can't be contained. So, there are just some authors guaranteed to get my money for the hardback first edition, first printing of their work. In the coming days, there may just be more in-depth book reviews but for now, let me add to that to-be-read pile.

September 3rd new releases, Young Adult Stand Outs

The first week of September was all about the YA releases. Don't expect that trend to end any time soon either. Some of the most dynamic writing on the market comes from this genre. The problem is, there's been such an uptick of books labeled YA, it's difficult to find something that may be to your taste. Here are a few standouts from my stack.

September 3rd New Releases - Katy Rose Pool

Official Synopsis: All they left behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . . or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set on a collision course:
A prince exiled from his kingdom.
A ruthless killer, known as the Pale Hand.
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone.
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up.
One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer?

Quick Take: The writing style is straightforward but full of vivid descriptions and great characters. The premise may be a YA staple but the delivery is anything but ordinary. Pool's leveraged loving ruthlessness, the ravages of war and the vagaries of religious fanatics into a dynamic story that starts out as a slow burn relying on shifting narratives to set the stage riddled with angst, grit and the fate of the world hanging in the balance...because who doesn't like that?  I received an ARC of this title in exchange for talking about the book honestly. I STILL bought a finished hardback as soon at it hit my local indie; so what does that tell you about how I felt about this story, hmmm? READ. THIS. BOOK.

September 3rd New Releases - Adrienne Young

Official Synopsis: For as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is dangerously close to collapse.

For the first time in generations, the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a series of events that will not only change the landscape of the mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could never have again—a home.

Quick Take: This standalone novel, written ten years after the action in Sky in the Deep, is beautifully written. There's a bit more emphasis on fighting and battle than love affairs (I do not consider that a bad thing) and the story takes some time to get moving but it brings forward an initially secondary character and builds a story worthy of returning to this universe.

What I'm reading next:

I love books that find a way to intertwine magic and music. I also can't seem to say no to a story where power obtained comes at great personal cost. So, The Harp of Kings and Kingdom of Souls both made my watchlist before I even finished reading the synopsis. Both look to be the beginning of interesting trilogies and neither shies away from letting things go dark, fast.

September 3rd New Releases - Juliet Marillier

Official Synopsis: Eighteen-year-old Liobhan is a powerful singer and an expert whistle player. Her brother has a voice to melt the hardest heart, and a rare talent on the harp. But Liobhan's burning ambition is to join the elite warrior band on Swan Island. She and her brother train there to compete for places, and find themselves joining a mission while still candidates. Their unusual blend of skills makes them ideal for this particular job, which requires going undercover as traveling minstrels. For Swan Island trains both warriors and spies.

Their mission: to find and retrieve a precious harp, an ancient symbol of kingship, which has gone mysteriously missing. If the instrument is not played at the upcoming coronation, the candidate will not be accepted and the people could revolt. Faced with plotting courtiers and tight-lipped druids, an insightful storyteller, and a boorish Crown Prince, Liobhan soon realizes an Otherworld power may be meddling in the affairs of the kingdom. When ambition clashes with conscience, Liobhan must make a bold decision and is faced with a heartbreaking choice.

September 3rd New Releases - Rena Barron

Official Synopsis: Born into a family of powerful witchdoctors, Arrah yearns for magic of her own. But each year she fails to call forth her ancestral powers, while her ambitious mother watches with growing disapproval.

There’s only one thing Arrah hasn’t tried, a deadly last resort: trading years of her own life for scraps of magic. Until the Kingdom’s children begin to disappear, and Arrah is desperate to find the culprit.

She uncovers something worse. The long-imprisoned Demon King is stirring. And if he rises, his hunger for souls will bring the world to its knees… unless Arrah pays the price for the magic to stop him.

If you like your fantasy built around unusual mythologies (Celtic-Galic inspired for Harp and West Africa inspired for Kingdom), and a main character with their back pushed to the wall either of these titles (if you're like me, both) may be just the thing to get to kick off your next reading obsession.

Unsure What to Read? Try The Mythic Dream Anthology

September 3rd New Releases - Dominik Parisien

Official Synopsis: These are dreams of classic myths, bold reimaginings of the stories we tell about gods and kings, heroes who shaped nations, the why and how of the world.

Journey with us to the fields of Elysium and the Midwest, through labyrinths and the space between stars. Witness the birth of computerized deities and beasts that own the night. Experience eternal life through curses and biochemistry.

Quick Take: I bought this sight unseen after noticing that Naomi Novik contributed and realized these reimaginings were intriguing takes on some classics. A few of my personal favorites were penned by, Amal El-Mohtar, Kat Howard, Anne Leckie, and J.Y. Yang. Set aside time because these 18 short stories tales are captivating enough to keep you reading. The Mythic Dream does not disappoint.

Have no fear, going forward, I'll be doing weekly new release break downs so your book buying stays manageable addiction...maybe. *stares at the overflowing bag I just brought home from a local independent bookstore*

*FTC Notice: There are books mentioned in this post that I gained access to ARCs for in exchange for an honest review. I can't be bought (not even with books) so my opinion is always my own because no one is the boss of me, except my mama.
